Plant Parts
Canned Food Drive
A JMG Service-Learning Project
Why not combine your students’ learning and CAN do enthusiasm with a true service-learning project? The plant parts food drive is a fun way to learn more about the foods we eat, where they come from, and how we can help others. Collecting canned vegetables helps us learn about plant parts that we eat
Have your students collect canned goods for donation to a local food bank.
HOWEVER, with this can drive your kids will collect and categorize each can received by each part of the plant (roots, stems, leaves, flower, fruit, and seeds). This service project will help create hunger awareness, aid with the problem in your local area and include a great lesson on plant parts!
You, your students, their families, neighbors and your fellow teachers will be surprised to learn that some of your canned foods and other non-perishables don’t come from the plant part you may have thought!
