This unusual fruit gets it’s popular name as the Dragon fruit for its leather/rubber skin and scale like spikes but is also known as Pitaya in Central and South America. The Pitaya, is the fruit of several different cacti species of the climbing cacti family. The fruit’s origin is unknown but is thought to be indigenous to the Americas. This fruit was once exported primarily by Vietnam but is now being produced all over the world. The Dragon fruit is not only sweet and delicious but also contains a rich source of vitamin C, calcium and phosphorus, which help to aid in digestion.
