Eat. Learn. Live. and Grow Grant

Planting the seeds of health and wellness, The 2016 Eat. Learn. Live. and Grow Grant sponsored by Chartwells K12 in partnership with KidsGardening.org offers funding for schools seeking to enhance their curriculum and offer food and nutrition education through an edible garden program.  Any public or private school in the U.S. serving students in grades K to 12 and planning a new or expanding an established garden program is eligible to apply. The selection of winners will be based on demonstrated or potential program impact and sustainability in addition to how well the program connects to the theme “How Do You Eat. Learn. Live. and Grow?”

Grant Packages

18 grants will be awarded. Grants include:

  • 15 grant packages valued at $1,000 to be distributed to new and existing school garden programs.  The packages will include:
  • $900 check to purchase plants, soil, garden equipment and tools
  • $100 KidsGardening curriculum package
  • Chartwells Eat. Learn. Live. materials.
  • 2 grant packages valued at $2,500 for the top applicant with an existing school garden program. The packages will include:
  • $2,400 check to purchase plants, soil, garden equipment and tools
  • $100 KidsGardening curriculum package
  • Chartwells Eat. Learn. Live. materials.
  • 1 grant package valued at $5,000 for the top applicant proposing a new school garden program. The package will include:
  • $4,900 check to purchase plants, soil, garden equipment and tools
  • $100 KidsGardening curriculum package
  • Chartwells Eat. Learn. Live. Materials

In addition to the award packages, winners will be invited to attend a special Webinar Series conducted by experts at KidsGardening.org and sponsored by Chartwells K12.  Participants will also be able to share experiences and gain additional support through a special Eat. Learn. Live and Grow Forum designed to provide individualized assistance and ensure the success of each school garden program.

Who is Eligible to Apply

Public or private schools in the U.S. serving students in grades K to 12.

Submission Process

Due Date: Applications must be submitted by August 31, 2016.

Online Application: The application is completed through an online survey system. Click here to begin the application.

Application Tips:

Please read through the entire application before you begin. This will help you avoid duplicating information and allow you to make the best use of the available space. Click here to download a pdf file of the questions to view ahead of time.  We strongly advise saving the questions into a word document and copying and pasting your answers into the application.

The online application system will time out after 2 hours. You may save your application and go back in and edit by clicking the “save and resume later.” Once you select “submit” you will not be able to edit or access your application. You will receive a confirmation statement that the application was successfully received after you select submit. Also note, applications that are started, but not submitted, will not be considered for the award.

Award Fulfillment

Winners will be notified via email on September 30, 2016. A list of winners will also be posted on KidsGardening.org. Awards will be distributed in October 2016.

Reporting Requirement

Grant awardees will be required to report about their garden’s progress within six month of receiving the award. These reports help KidsGardening determine the overall impact of the grant program and gather ongoing support for youth gardening. If you do not feel that you will be able to comply with these requirements please do not apply. Recipients who do not complete these requirements will not be eligible to apply for future awards.

Reporting requirements include:

  • 5-10 digital images of the school garden
  • Parental release forms to accompany images of children
  • Completion of an online survey
  • An updated overview of the garden program
