Fall is the time of year where warm feelings, good food, and wonderful smells reappear in classroom, businesses, and homes. We love the smell of fall here at JMG! Here is a way you can incorporate fruits and herbs from the garden into your classroom, business, facility, or home. It cost less than $10 to make, with few ingredients, and naturally will freshen your space almost immediately.
Ingredients:
2 medium/large size oranges (substitutes – grapefruit, pomegranate)
1 can of cinnamon sticks
bay leaves (substitutes – rosemary, basil, another herb)
Instructions:
Step One – Cut your oranges into 1/2 or 1/4 inch slices
Step Two – Preheat your oven to 200 degrees and bake the oranges on the rack for 4 hours. We put ours in an aluminum pan and it took twice as long. It’s imperative you use the rack. To prevent the juices from getting everywhere, put the aluminum pan on the rack below the oranges.
Step Three – Pick some type of herb from the garden and hole punch the leaves. We choose bay leaves, because we have a nice sized tree outside our building.
Step Four – Drying can take days, so use the microwave method if you are limited for time. Place the leaves inside two paper towels in the microwave for 1.5 minutes. If you smell the leaves burning, take them out immediately.
Step Five – Use yarn or some type of string to put the pieces together. Wrap and tie around each cinnamon stick instead of drilling a hole.
Step Six – Continue stringing together your door hanger until it is about 8 inches long. Tie a loop on the end and hang it on your door!
Enjoy your fresh scent of fall!
