Have you used an object in a way that it probably wasn’t meant to be used? What about using that object to create a work of art? Very often people use items for reasons they were not intended for. Here you can see someone uses a bath tub as a garden! Now isn’t that funny?
One with The Wind!
Some would call this re-purposing, and it is a great example of how we can recycle old things and make them new! Lets try!
Can you think of something around your house that you could create into art right now? How about we try re-purposing a plastic cup into a wind chime? A wind chime is an outdoor piece of art that is not only nice to look at, but makes music when blown by the wind! They are all shapes and sizes, and can be hung anywhere the wind blows, like your back porch! Follow the instructions to make your very own Wind Chime! If you don’t have a plastic cup, try using a milk jug! Be sure to have an adult help you cut off the top.
For this activity, you will need the following supplies:
- Plastic Cup
- Hole Punch
- Scissors
- String, Yarn, or Ribbon
- Decorations
- Glue
- Beads
- Misc. items that make noise
Get an adult to help you with this step!
- Using a hole punch, punch up to 10 holes around the edge of the mouth of the cup!
Remember each hole you punch must have something hanging from it at the end!
Once your holes are punched, decorate your cup. Here are some decorating supplies you could use.
- Paint
- Markers
- Paper & Glue
- Foam Squares
- Stickers
Be sure not to cover the holes with your decorations. SET ASIDE TO DRY COMPLETELY!
Use the time your cup is drying to cut some string for the chime part of your wind chime.
- Cut the number of strings to match the number of holes you punched in your cup. The length depends on how long you want them to be.
- Cut 1 string at least 2-3 feet.
- Add beads, your any other noise making objects to your strings. be sure to tie them securely so they do not fall in the wind!
Now that your decorated cup is completely dry, it is time to add the chimes. Have an adult help you put a hole in the top of your cup, tie a knot in your 2-3 foot string and place it through the hole. This will be the string you had your wind chime with!
- Add the rest of your chimes and you’re done!
Hang your wind chime outside and listen to the music!
