This is called a Tessellation Square.

It is the repetition of a shape that is turned into an image!

The images created in Tessellation Squares are completely made up! Its up to designer to choose what image comes from the square!

Now its your turn!

Follow the steps below to make your own work of art!

To create you own you will need the following supplies!

  • 1 piece of plain paper
  • 1 piece of stiff paper cut into 3 in x 3 in square
  • Pencil
  • Crayons
  • Tape
  • Scissors

Design your square!

To create you square, start at ONE corner and draw an curvy line to the other end.

The more curves in your lines, the more interesting your design will be!

Do this to 2 sides that are next to each other!

With the help of an adult, cut on the lines that you drew. Be careful and cut only the lines.

Then, place the cut piece on the opposite side and tape. Make sure not to flip the cut piece before you tape it. It needs to match the opposite side!

Try to cover the whole page with your design!

Now comes the funnest part, you need to choose what you are going to draw in your design.

Be creative, it can be anything you want. We used a Maple Leaf, but there are so many other designs we could have used as well!

If you have difficulty trying to design one yourself, try using one of the designs at the bottom of the page!

Once you have decided on your image, draw it in all your traced shapes! Grab your crayons and start to color them in!

Try creating a pattern of repetition in the colors you use. Our pattern is Red, Orange, and Yellow!

Done Coloring?

After you are done coloring, try to find some other uses of repetition in your picture! Count how many ways you find it! You could even try making other picture with the same stencil and seeing if you find another image like we did!

Give your picture to a friend or frame it to hang on the wall!
